Monthly and quarterly data until 2020 are processed by period (month) of delivery of OBYV 1-5/12 statistical reports from the reporting units to the Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic. Due to possible shifts in the reporting obligation by the reporting units (registry offices, residence registration offices, district courts), the date (period) of the statistical processing may not be the same as the date of the demographic event.
Monthly and quarterly data from 2021 onwards are processed by date of the demographic event (i. e. the date on which the demographic event occurred ´de facto´). They are updated regularly during the reference year and are preliminary data. Once the reference year is closed and the annual data are published, the monthly and quarterly data are final.
The number of population on 31 December of a given year is equal to the number of population on 1 January of the subsequent year, except in years in which a census of population, houses and dwellings is carried out to update the population number:
population on 31 December 2001 ≠ population on 1 January 2002 (2001 Census)
population on 31 December 2010 ≠ population on 1 January 2011 (2011 Census)
population on 31 December 2020 ≠ population on 1 January 2021 (2021 Census).
The mid-period population reflects the population at the midpoint of the reference period.
The mid-month population is calculated as the arithmetic mean of the beginning and end stocks of the monthly population, as follows: (the population at the beginning of the month + the population at the end of that month) / 2.
The mid-quarter population is calculated as the arithmetic mean of the beginning and end stocks of the monthly populations in a quarter of the year. For example, for the 1st quarter of the year, the following applies: (population on 1 January + 2x population on 1 February + 2x population on 1 March + population on 31 March) / 6.
The mid-year population (i. e. the population at midnight from 30 June to 1 July of the reference year) is calculated using the demographic balancing method (i. e. the number of population at the beginning of the year plus the population change for the first half of the year).
Data on population changes are obtained from statistical reports processing about demographic population events (births, deaths, marriages, divorces, migration) producing statistical survey contents on population. The data cover all inhabitants residing permanently in Slovakia regardless of their citizenship. Demographic statistics includes also the statistics on spontaneous and induced abortions, which are compiled from data obtained from the sector surveying of the Ministry of Health of the SR.
Migration statistics includes internal migration (permanent address changes between municipalities, or city parts in Bratislava and Košice, districts and regions) and foreign migration, which means a change of the country of residence, irrespective of citizenship.
Data from the Population and Housing Census make up the foundation for balancing of the number and structure of the population by sex, age, marital status, nationality, education, country of birth and citizenship, in the next ten years’ term.
In 2012, the processing of birth statistics changed. While until 2011, the number of births had included also children born abroad by mothers with permanent residence in the Slovak Republic (SR), since 2012, the birth statistics have included children born in the SR only, and the number of the SR population has included only those foreign-born children, who were registered on permanent residence in the SR.
The methodology and the content of demographic statistics are internationally comparable.
Live births (persons) – a live-born child is a child showing at least one of the following signs of life at birth such as breathing, beating of the heart, pulsation of the umbilical cord, active movement of muscles though the umbilical cord has not been cut or the placenta has not been born. At the same time, the birth weight is a) 500 and more grams or b) 499 grams and less if a child survives 24hours after its birth.
Stillbirths (persons) – a stillborn child means a child who did not show any signs of life at any time after being born, and his/her birth weight was 1 000 grams and more.
Abortion (number in units) – the number of spontaneous abortions (miscarriages) + the number of induced abortions.
Abortion is premature spontaneous or artificially induced termination of pregnancy including extra-uterine pregnancy where the foetus does not show signs of life and its birth weight is below 1 000 grams, or the foetus shows some sign of life and its birth weight is below 500 grams but it does not survive 24 hours, or if the weight of the foetus cannot be established and duration of gestation is below 28 weeks. Induced abortion is artificially induced termination of pregnancy including extra-uterine pregnancy. Spontaneous abortion (miscarriage) is spontaneous termination of pregnancy, i. e., an abortion due to biological causes, without an obvious external intervention.
Pregnancy termination (number in units) – the number of births + the number of abortions.
Infant mortality (persons) – the number of deaths of children aged up to 1 year.
Neonatal mortality (persons) – the number of deaths of children aged 0-27 days.
Natural increase (persons) – the number of live births - the number of deaths.
Immigrants on permanent residence / Emigrants from permanent residence (persons) – persons regardless of citizenship who have changed the municipality (or city part in Bratislava and Košice) of permanent residence within the territory of the Slovak Republic (i. e. internal migration) or who have changed the country of permanent residence (i. e. international migration).
Net migration (persons) – the number of immigrants - the number of emigrants.
Total increase of population (persons) – natural increase + net migration.
Perinatal death (persons) – the number of stillbirths + the number of deaths of children aged up to 7 days.
Crude marriage rate (per mille) – (the number of marriages / mid-year population) * 1 000.
Crude divorce rate (per mille) – (the number of divorces / mid-year population) * 1 000.
Divorce index (per cent) – (the number of divorces / the number of new marriages) * 100
Crude birth rate (per mille) – (the number of births / mid-year population) * 1 000.
Crude live-birth rate (per mille) – (the number of live births / mid-year population) * 1 000.
Abortion ratio (per cent) – (the number of abortions / the number of births) * 100.
Induced abortion ratio (per cent) – (the number of induced abortions / the number of births) * 100.
Pregnancy termination rate (per mille) – (the number of pregnancy terminations / mid-year population) * 1 000.
Crude death rate (per mille) – (the number of deaths / mid-year population) * 1 000.
Crude rate of natural increase of population (per mille) – ((the number of live births - the number of deaths) / mid-year population) * 1 000.
Stillbirth rate (per mille) – (the number of stillbirths / the number of births) * 1 000.
Infant mortality rate (per mille) – (the number of deaths of children aged up to 1 year / the number of live births) * 1 000.
Neonatal mortality rate (per mille) – (the number of deaths of children aged 0-27 days / the number of live births) * 1 000.
Standard infant mortality rate (per mille) – (the number of deaths of children aged up to 1 year with the birth weight of 1 000 g and over / the number of live births with the birth weight of 1 000 g and over) * 1 000.
Standard neonatal mortality rate (per mille) – (the number of deaths of children aged 0-27 days with the birth weight of 1 000 g and over / the number of live births with the birth weight of 1 000 g and over) * 1 000.
Perinatal mortality rate (per mille) – ((the number of stillbirths + the number of deaths of children aged up to 7 days) / number of births) * 1 000.
Immigrants on permanent residence per 1 000 population (per mille) – (the number of immigrants / mid-year population) * 1 000.
Emigrants from permanent residence per 1 000 population (per mille) – (the number of emigrants / mid-year population) * 1 000.
Crude rate of net migration (per mille) – ((the number of immigrants - the number of emigrants) / mid-year population) * 1 000.
Crude rate of total increase of population (per mille) – ((natural increase + net migration) / mid-year population) * 1 000.
Crude abortion rate (per mille) – (the number of abortions / mid-year population) * 1 000.
On March 31, 2025, data for 1993, 1994, 1995 were corrected.
On September 12, 2025 data for year 1993 were corrected. The corrections of data concern indicators of the stock and change of the population, which are calculated from the mid-year (mean) population for the Prešov Region, Svidník District, and the municipality of Dukovce.
Data source:
Statistical Office of the SR (Obyv 2-12, Obyv 3-12, Obyv 5-12)

http://datacube.statistics.sk/#!/view/en/vbd_dem/om7102rr/v_om7102rr_00_00_00_en
om7102rr_vuc","om7102rr_obd","om7102rr_ukaz","om7102rr_poh","om7102rr_data
1,1,1,1,1
om7102rr_obd
om7102rr_vuc
om7102rr_data
om7102rr_vuc":
{"SK0422_0425":0
SK0422_0425":"Košice (districts I - IV)"}}},"om7102rr_obd":
{"2025":0}}},"om7102rr_ukaz":
{"IN010115":0
IN010115":"Population as of the end of a given period (Person)"}}},"om7102rr_poh":
"om7102rr_data":
[222286]}
